The Birds

Birds, signifies troubles that we will have to endure, but only for a short time. Far from the person this card is a sign of happy journey.

Original Instructions

When the Birds’ card appears, feathers get ruffled. It warns that some brouhaha is on the horizon. Often this causes the Querent some upset, but it never lasts long.

We all know birds are vocal. Seeing this card in a reading forecasts a time when people are on edge and eager to have their say. There is some matter everyone is caught up in. It will often leave the Querent feeling “mobbed” and uncertain. But just as birds never stay in one place long, events move fast and calm is restored. So she is advised to hold in and be careful what she says.

Quite a few readers associate the Birds with telephone calls. For me, the Letter is the card of ‘phone calls. If the Birds talk of conversations, you will usually find it is face-to-face and several people either squabbling or wanting their say.

The Birds is the card I associate with conception. The dominant motif in traditional patterns is that they are nesting birds, some of which specifically show the young.

The association between gravidity and the Stork has become de rigueur in recent times. After all, we all know the stories of the storks delivering babies – but deliver and conceive are not the same. Besides, few traditional Lenormand decks show nesting storks. The traditional design is a single, wading stork. Thus it is the Birds foretell a pregnancy.

It is often contended that the Birds’ card is one of several ‘double’ or ‘two’ cards. Within the folklore of the cards, some cards are held to be quantitative – some by iconography, others by their numbers. The quantification is nothing more than a description provided by the ‘B’ card in an ‘A’ – ‘B’ pairing. The Birds two comes from the design as the card is often illustrated with two birds. But beware: there are decks that show one, three, four or more birds on this card. If you deck does not have two birds it cannot indicate a two.

Occasionally, the two can be two people: a couple, siblings, an aunt and uncle, and so on.

In timing, the Birds are Eastertide.
